One purchases a book like this for only one reason: to learn how to install an Icom 802 single sideband radio. I purchased this book, on the recommendation of some other cruising friends, and I was unerringly guided along a complicated path of purchases and installations toward the installation of a working Icom M802 SSB. There is absolutely no fluff, no filler, no irrelevant information.This is book 5 in Commander Sparks' series of books for cruisers. Commander Sparks is in a position to be an expert at SSB installation. He was trained in electronics by the US Navy then became an electrical engineer. He has honed his skills by repairing and installing marine SSBs while he and his wife cruise the Sea of Cortez.
"Starting from Scratch" begins with information on the basics of HF radio, including licenses and such that one needs. About 25% of the book concerns the installation, while the remainder concerns the actual use of the radio. Commander Sparks includes many excellent images that clarify the text. He provides graphics that illustrate the systems that he proposes. He uses lists to enumerate the items to purchase and an excellent list of items to check before the first transmission.
Now that Commander Sparks has guided my successful installation of both the 802 and the Pactor P4 modem, I'm working through his information for using the system for voice, data (weather fax, for example) and email.
I read this book and was able to purchase all of the material i needed to install a working Icom 802 while in Mexico, far from parts stores. Commander Sparks does not leave you with a book's worth of help, but generously and selflessly responds to emails from his readers. It's a practice that I've never experienced before by any author.
I highly recommend this book by this author for this purpose. I have never met nor do i have any financial affiliation or understanding with him.

Excellent book for first time installation
Everything you'll want to know about shortwave radio installation in a sail oat cruiser.
Has many bits of information that the ICOM manual that come with the M802 has missing or stated in a confusing way.
Great book, I am currently installing a Icom 802 now on my PSC Orion, I have learned a lot of tips for a successful installation.
Great book if installing an Icom 802 SSB yourself. Also goes into a little detail about using the SSB.
Starts at the novice level and takes you through to expert. Lots of tips/tricks along the way.
Purchased this book prior to installing an 802, kiss, and gam. As other reviews say, it is concise and leads you through. I would add, however, that most or almost all of this information is in the ICOM instructions, the kiss instructions, or the gam instructions. I would also say that the parts of the book on using the radio are not as helpful as I would like. The ICOM manual does tell you what all the buttons do and the book does not go much beyond this. A personal peeve - the book is loaded with grammatical errors and needs to be edited.
Would I buy it again? Probably. Was it helpful? Yes.
